I would like to see a new Civic Centre complex with one or both of the other School Boards. The current City Hall is a dump at best.
I think we should save city hall as an historic site
It’s so stupid to keep leasing space throughout the downtown. Think about it – how much will the next 40 years cost in leases? With all that money alone you could re-build City Hall.
Short term pain for long term gain. Also keep this in mind, if the Board was apart of a new Civic Centre, they have Capital dollars that would go toward the project thus reducing the burden on the general Municipal tax levy.
What about all the extra leasing costs for 10 years to rebuild it now? the entirety of city hall would have to leave and rent space some where else?!!?!
Norman, I doubt it would take 10 years. The City either way has committed itself until 2010. I would think that there would need to be a three year extension. Even so, consider the costs of leases over 40 years vs. consolidating all our staff, even with the additional three years, it’s still cheaper.
Terry – how much does it cost to lease space in various locations throughout the downtown per year now to house all staff? How much will it cost once the Lister comes online?
Terry asked me to respond on his behalf: In the long run, the cost estimations are about the same (renovating and leasing extra space vs. rebuilding).
The thinking behind this is that renovating is a smaller cost now and will draw-out the cost over 10 years. Rebuilding requires a large investment now and smaller drawn out costs.
