Put A Lid On It
At a recent Public Works Committee meeting a motion was set forward which calls for a feasibility study to be taken for the idea of using larger Blue Boxes with lids. These Blue Boxes would be similar to the current large Green Bins in size and shape. The plan is that these new boxes will promote increased recycling and help reduce litter problems.
Many people have said that they find the current containers much too small, and on windy days, paper and light plastic blowing around is a common sight. Additionally, the lids will help keep animals away from recyclables that have food odours or debris on them.
There will be some time before the reports are finished, as the final report has a due date prior to the 2009 Budget process, which will likely begin in January of 2009. At this time there are no details available regarding cost or range of implementation. However, given the City’s dedication to reducing waste, I would like to hear what you think of this idea. Would you prefer a large container with a lid, and possibly wheels, for recycling instead of the current Blue Boxes?

I think it’s an excellent idea!
Good idea for the blue. I would like to see a smaller green bin made available.
Use new blue boxes exactly the same as the green ones. The green ones are of good enough quality, that we shouldn’t have to worry about any durability issues. A mechanism or provision for some sort of a latch for the lid might be in order (keeping animals at bay). The same bin manufacturer will be fine. Do not use a different design; consistency matters! If the city want to get fancy in the future, we can look into the use of a yellow bin for plastics.
