Background Details

Hamilton Health Science (HHS) has put together a proposal which they call ‘Access to Best Care.’  This plan has many problems that HHS is not willing to address. The Minister of Health and Long-Term Care will not discuss the problems and many MPP’s have not taken an active stance.

On September 29, 2008, the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Integration Network, (HNHBLHIN) is making a decision regarding this proposal, despite City Councillors’ request for an extension.

Please write a personal letter addressed to: Murray Martin (President and CEO of HHS), Juanita Gledhill (the Chair of HNHBLHIN), MPP Sophia Aggelonitis, MPP Andrea Horwath, MPP Ted McMeekin, MPP Tim Hudak, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care David Caplan, and Premier Dalton McGuinty. (see contact details below).

Personal letters really make a difference! We need to let LHIN and the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care know that decisions regarding this proposal need to be postponed another 60 days to allow for proper consultation.

The citizens of Hamilton want the following question answered: “What problem is the proposal trying to solve?  How will closing the Adult Emergency Room at McMaster solve it?

Points to include in your letter:

1) The closure of the Adult Emergency Care at McMaster University Medical Centre (MUMC) would seriously and detrimentally affect 170,000 Hamilton residents.

2) Projected population growth is occurring on the Mountain and surrounding areas, yet hospital access for them is limited by mountain access routes.

3) The only group that has contributed to the current plan has vested interests that do not necessarily take in the needs of the general population.

4) Respectfully request that decisions regarding this plan be delayed 60 days to provide HHS the opportunity to answer the question “What problem is the proposal trying to solve?  How will closing the Adult Emergency Room at McMaster solve it?”

5) Respectfully request that decisions regarding this plan be delayed 60 days to provide local MPP’s, Councillors and the General Public time to review HHS’s responses to our concerns.
