Snow Plowing Update

I received a Public Service Announcement, (PSA) from staff earlier today that was issued to the media and I felt I had to post the message, because I believe it is an important one.  As you know, we’ve had some bad problems with flooding on the West Mountain.  Please see below for a reminder from staff:

HAMILTON, ON – February 16, 2007 – With the effects of road salting and with warmer daytime temperatures forecast for the beginning of next week, Hamilton’s Public Works department requests the help of residents to prevent street flooding and icing by clearing snow away from storm sewer catchbasins. When the weather turns warmer and snow begins to melt it’s important that the runoff water gets into the storm sewer. If the catchbasin is fully or partially covered by a build-up of snow and ice, street flooding can occur. Residents who remove snow from catchbasins located near their homes should do so carefully and safely and should check for traffic before proceeding.

The City of Hamilton’s Public Works crews continue to remove snow piled along major arterial routes in the city.  To avoid personal injury or damage to your vehicle, drivers and pedestrians are reminded to stay well clear of snow removal equipment.  Please park your vehicle off major city streets overnight to allow safe and effective snow removal.

Residents are reminded that Green Cart, Blue Box, bulk and white goods collection has been be pushed back by one day for this week only.  If today is your usual waste collection day, your garbage, Blue Box and Green Cart materials and any scheduled Bulk and White Goods collection will be picked up Saturday.  Please ensure your waste containers are visible to collection crews.

With the possibility of quick changes in weather conditions, Hamilton’s Public Works Department reminds drivers to always drive in accordance with the winter weather conditions and make sure your vehicle is maintained and equipped properly for changing winter conditions. Pedestrians should take great care around snowbanks. Remind children of the dangers of slipping or falling into the path of vehicles.
